Women drivers – loved by all!

March 2007

A Budget Van Insurance survey carried out by YouGov and published today shows that twelve per cent of UK drivers believe that men in general need to improve their road manners compared to just one per cent of respondents who think women should.

On the whole men and women agree on who are the rudest motorists – apart from their views on male drivers that is: eighteen per cent of women compared to just 6 per cent of men believe it is men who behave most obnoxiously on the road.

Women drivers, bus drivers and older drivers are seen to be the safest drivers with just 1 per cent of UK drivers seeing them as most likely to break the law.  Cyclists are seen as a bigger safety threat than 4x4 drivers – voted for by nearly twice as many respondents.

Emma Maziak, Budget Van Insurance, says:
“The results from this survey come as no surprise and seem to reflect driving accident rates across the UK population.  The general view is that women do take fewer risks than men and our findings indicate that they’re also less likely to blow a fuse when they’re in control of a car.  Ultimately, though, good driving is down to skill and nothing can replace years of motoring experience regardless of sex.”

Key findings

  • 12 per cent see male drivers in general as the rudest.  Women and older drivers come off best with only 1 per cent considering them as rude.
  • Men – generally speaking - agree with who women see as the rudest road users with the exception of their views on men.  18 per cent of women see men as the rudest on the road, while only 6 per cent of men see themselves in that light.
  • Female drivers, older drivers and bus drivers are seen as those least likely to bend the rules – with just 1 per cent of UK drivers seeing them as most likely to break the law.
  • Cyclists are seen as more likely to break the law than 4x4 drivers – 5 per cent compared to 3 per cent.
