Van drivers urged ‘make savings ahead of 2007 road toll and tax increases’

Drive down the cost of your van insurance by up to £303 with Budget Van Insurance

December 2006

M6 toll increases effective from 1 January 2007 and new tax rules in April around work van usage after hours will hit many van drivers where it hurts.  To lessen the blow, Budget Van Insurance is urging drivers to shop around for the best deal on their insurance.  Latest figures show that van drivers could save up to 46 per cent on their annual premiums - which could add up to as much as £303 in your pocket.   There are savings to be made for all tradesmen ranging from painters and decorators through to carpenters and plumbers.

How much can you save?

The amounts paid for premiums vary according to age, sex, address, driving record and the type of vehicles owned.  Occupation also plays a big part with painters and decorators for example being most likely to benefit from the biggest savings.

Matthew Gledhill, Managing Director, Budget Van Insurance, says:-

“Even though the cost of buying a vehicle has gone down considerably, the costs of motoring are increasing and the latest expenses - along with constantly rising fuel costs -won’t be welcomed by our customers, especially small business owners.

“Insuring your van adds up to nearly a quarter of annual motoring expenses and it’s one of the easiest to drive down.  It pays to shop around for the best deal and by doing so, the quality of cover need not be sacrificed.  Allowing policies to roll over without exploring alternatives is like throwing money down the drain.”

Budget Van Insurance top tips for saving money on your van insurance premium:

Your vehicle

  1. When you purchase your van, think about whether you really need the biggest, most powerful vehicle in the showroom.  That extra space and horsepower may sound impressive but will cost you more to insure than a slightly smaller, less powerful vehicle.
  2. Consider adding livery to your van – a branded van is less attractive to thieves and is easier to identify in the case of an accident.
  3. Installing an alarm can save you up to 10% depending upon the type of alarm.
  4. An immobiliser on your vehicle can also save you as much as 10%2on your premium.
  5. If you are able to lock your van in a garage overnight, do it – this could save you money on your insurance premium and will protect it from thieves.

Your insurance policy

  1. Restrict the number of drivers on your policy, particularly those under the age of 25.  Your premium will be priced according to the youngest driver or the one with the least experience
  2. Consider accepting a higher excess on your insurance policy.  Most policies include a voluntary and/or compulsory excess.  If you are prepared to accept a higher excess you can reduce your insurance premium.
