Summer Theft

July 2009

Vehicle Thefts Soar as Temperatures Rise

Data released this week by Budget Van Insurance shows that as the mercury rises, so do the number of claims for attempted thefts and stolen vehicles. In the six month period March to August* claims increased by an average of 66% for attempted theft, compared to the rest of the year.

Budget Van Insurance is warning drivers against becoming careless with vehicle security in the heat. Many people will leave windows open an inch or two to help keep cars and vans cool while they’re parked, or will leave the keys in the ignition with the engine running whilst they pop into a shop. This not only leaves your vehicle more vulnerable to theft, but can potentially invalidate your insurance policy if it has not been left properly secured.

Mnveer Arkan, Budget Van Insurance said: "As the temperature rises people’s attitudes become more relaxed but it only takes an opportunist a few seconds to hop into your van or car and drive it away if it hasn’t been left properly secured. We would urge drivers to be more aware of this as summer arrives."
